Andrea Giulivi, Muscles, 2009, egg shells, egg boxes, wood, acrylic, glue, 45 x 45 x 40 cm
My work is centred around some major themes, often merging:
- “Instability” and “Uncertainty”; I am dealing with the idea of “liquidity” of living, as a major facet of contemporariness, which challenges the notion of “stability”, “progress” and “improvement”. I am interested in the issue of “loss of security”, “over-focusing” and “over-exploiting”, and with the imbalance this create; with the issue of usage, abuse and exploitation of people over other people, and with the fair/unfair binomial (sometimes this having a social/political dimension); with the feeling of “incompleteness”, and of being “aware” of instability itself.
- Duality and “hidden” meanings: I am interested in the “double side” that situations, people, and facts often have, sometimes to be looked at as “positive” and “negative”, and particularly in exploring the “dark side” of knowledge, awareness, love, beauty and pleasure;
- Gay relationships and sexuality: I am interested in investigating how gay people structure and live their emotional, interpersonal and sexual relationships in a “liquid” context; and in how internet, gays events, and the use of drugs are consistently reshaping the way gay people interrelate and communicate.
