Paul Sakoilsky - The Dark Times 2007/09

The Dark Times project began in 2007, when Sakoilsky became self-styled ‘editor-in-chief’ of the ‘paper’. Making use of the daily forest of used London’s free, (and or other found/donated) newspapers he began collecting these “from train, bus and street, 'editing' the covers with paint and collage, adding, altering and deconstructing image and text to create a new periodical: The Dark Times. With the passage of time and the appearance of each succeeding cover this act of subversion has grown into an impressive body of work: at once satire and psycho-social investigation.” A question arose: ‘Are these the dark times: or is it just the persistent culture of apocalypse?’ Originally framed in the context of climate change/global politics, and a questioning of a news media given over to celebrity hype and bad news, (the old adage, good news is no news) - with the current global credit crisis, and its ongoing fallout, the project is evermore prescient.

The first ‘Dark Times: Press Office≠1’ was part live-in studio/installation, part informal symposia and part organizational headquarters for the Climate of Change show, where he was artist-in-residence (Cf. ‘ECO-ART: art in an age of ecology’, Art Monthly, Feb. 08). Now collected, published and shown internationally it is a dynamic, incorporating various media and art forms - for the V22 Sculpture/Oysters Ain't, Sakoilsky will show the first Dark Times: News Stand with a selection of 50
works/papers (2007-09).
