ZOE GRIFFITHS

We Are Your Friends (Rollneck, Carebear and Brownie), Enamel paint on mdf, Rollneck 165 x 48cm, Carebear 183 x 47cm, Brownie 160 x 50cm

My drawings and paintings are about constructing a short story, a story that represents not the particular but an essence. Through my work I draw upon fragments of overlooked or elusive moments from contemporary culture. Some of the fragments are biographical or self-referential but most are from our collective cultural experiences. The fictional portraits feel as though they’re nearly recognisable, whilst the objects and interiors project a sense of familiarity. I develop ideas by studying the everyday, the overlooked or the leftovers. Over time, I arrive at an image by drawing on the studies, fleeting observations and mental snapshots that I’ve absorbed. The process of accumulation can take weeks, sometime years but there comes a moment when I need to make this accumulation of imagery tangible. My work aims to highlight our lifestyles and aspirations and to capture the continual choices we make as we construct our identities using humour to articulate these themes.
