The Performance Studio

Monday 30 April 2012 V22 F Block

Based in V22's Bermondsey building, The Performance Studio is a new space dedicated to nurturing live art practice from some of the UK’s foremost experimental artists. Set up by independent curator, David Thorp, the space provides a creative hub, a free space for invited artists to experiment with and cultivate live art related activities over an extended period of time.

Based upon Thorp’s longstanding interest in performance, and the burgeoning live art scene, this small-scale, process-led project places performance centre stage and offers a creative refuge, free from market driven impetuses. The Performance Studio is an inward focused undertaking, based upon low expenditure and skill trading to support its operation. It exists solely for artists to develop new projects in experimental theatre, live art and moving image without commercial agenda or public pressure, so that ideas in gestation can grow freely and unconstrained.

“I wanted to create a space intentionally idealistic and independent; a creative hub, free from the demands of the art market, bureaucratic funding criteria and public accountability too often levied by the UK’s main funding bodies. Increasingly the artistic process is stymied by being under pressure to attract audiences rather than develop art forms. With The Performance Studio, I want to challenge the powers to determine what artists produce, by establishing a collective, productive and open-ended environment for artists to explore ideas.” - D.T.

The first artists invited to participate are: boyleANDshaw, Stuart Croft, Tai Shani, Gary Stevens, and Matthew Stone

The Performance Studio also works with Studio Associates who contribute periodically to the programme. Current Studio Associates: Catherine Borra, Terry Smith
